One of the events that brings out some great trumpet playing in the US is the National Trumpet Competition. It invites the best players, and includes divisions for Jr. High, High School, Undergrad, and Graduate level players, in addition to ensemble and jazz divisions. There’s even a division for “comeback trumpet players” over 28 years old.
They’ve got a good media channel on the National Trumpet Competition web site that shows highlight performances. The video above is from the 2009 competition and features an ensemble from Julliard performing Festive Overture, a piece you’re probably familiar with.
Check it out to see some inspired performances. The 2010 event was held last month, but if you’re really inspired, stay in touch with them for details on entering the 2011 competition!
